How To Increase Your Yahoo Ranking, Direct From The Mouth of Yahoo!

This item was filled under [ Search Engine (SEO), Yahoo ]

Today I am attending the second day of the SES Chicago Expo.  I am writing this post early in the afternoon so the information is fresh in my brain.  I actually made a few errors this morning such as leaving late for the city, causing me to be late for the first expert panel session.

I was actually planning on attending the ‘Advanced Keyword Research’ session, however I must have been confused as I ended up in the ‘Link Building Basics’ session.  I actually did not even realize it until about 10 minutes ago after reviewing the schedule and looking at my check marks.  Regardless, it was actually a fantastic mistake to make on my part as I had the opportunity to talk too and learn from Sharad Verma, Senior Product Manager of Yahoo! Search Technology.

Below you will read about some awesome Link Building info direct from Sharad himself to help increase your organic positioning in the Yahoo! SERP, getting crawled and getting indexed.

First off, how does Yahoo use link building in crawling, indexing and ranking your site?

Below is the breakdown of how Yahoo uses link building to determine your ranking, crawling & indexing in the Yahoo SERP.  All of these relate to Inbound Links (IBL) to your site.

1)      No Links to your site = NO Existence, Yahoo will Never find your site

2)      Few Links to your site = Minor discovery, NO index

3)      Some Links to your site = Crawl of your site, NO index

4)      Some More Links to your site = Crawl of your site, Index of your site, NO Ranking in the SERP

5)      Enough Links to your site = Ranking in the Top 10 of the Yahoo! SERP

6)      LOTS of Links to your site – Helps you rank for the keywords and keywords found in the anchor text of your IBL in the Yahoo! SERP.

Sadly, Sharad never got into the actual number of links to accompany the above, however if you are an SEO or actively build links you can fully understand the value in the above items.  To make this even more interesting, there is no question of doubt if this is fact or fiction as the information came directly out of Sharad Verma with Yahoo! himself.

This information from Sharad may be new for you, but for me it has solidified a theory.  No longer do we need to guess, this is how link building increases your ranking, increases your crawling and increases your indexing! Or at least until Yahoo! changes their algorithms…lol

    Greetings Mr. Greco,

Given the above information, how does relevancy and the nofollow tags come into play with Yahoo? Link building can be a free for all. For example, leaving my site’s URL here surfinjaco[dot]com will help me or hurt me? I have read and been told that referring sites relevance to your site is critical in the link building process. What is your opinion of this? Thanks

Hey Ike, Well, relevancy and the NOFOLLOW tags are two different things in terms of optimization. Seeing how yoiu mentioned a ’surf’ url and this a internet marking blog, there is no relevancy; I know because I checked out your site. Even so, this particular page has minimal page rank or authoirty (currently a PR 3), so you should have posted your url on a differnt page with higher aurhority…. So, when your out and about doing your link building next time make sure you plug your site on a page with higher authority, relevancy and does Not use a NOFOLLOW tag :)
